Website Writing

Your website should tell a stranger what you do, who it’s for and why they should care within the first few seconds. If yours doesn’t, I’ll find the story and write it.

Too many small business websites bury their hook. The owner knows what’s good about the business, because they live it every day, but the homepage opens with something general, safe and forgettable, and visitors move on before they reach the point. More of those visitors now arrive through an AI assistant that has read your site to decide what to tell them, and if the site is vague, the answer they get will be vague too.

The message comes first

When a website isn’t working, the first instinct is to fix the words. More often than not, the problem started long before the words. I work with a model I call the Communication Circle, which runs from energy through thought, emotion and feeling and behaviours to language, and back to energy again. If the thinking behind a business is muddled, or the owner feels awkward about what they charge, it shows on the page however carefully the sentences are put together.

That’s why every rewrite I do starts with the message. I can’t write your website if yours is muddled.

Ways to work with me

Mould the Message, £495

A two-hour one-to-one session in which we work through the Communication Circle and the five questions a journalist would ask about your business. You come away with a written summary of your message that you can use in your marketing yourself. If you go on to book me to do a rewrite, the fee is credited against it.

Priority Fixes, £850

For a site where the message is sound but the execution isn’t. I carry out up to five specific improvements that we agree in advance, such as a new homepage headline, clearer calls to action or pages that AI tools can read and repeat accurately.

Homepage and About page rewrite, £1,650

Mould the Message is included, followed by new copy for the two pages that do the most work on any website.

Whole site rewrite, £3,500

Mould the Message is included, followed by new copy for up to six pages, written for your readers and for the AI tools they increasingly use to find you. Additional pages are priced individually.

Not sure where to start?

The Website Read is an editorial and AI-visibility audit of your website for £147. You’ll get a written diagnosis of what’s working, what’s buried and what to fix first, and the fee is credited against any of the services above.

Or get in touch and tell me about your site. I’ll tell you which option will suit you best, even if it’s the smallest one.

Who it’s for

Small business owners, sole traders and practitioners whose website no longer says what their business does, or never quite did. You don’t need to know what’s wrong with it. Working that out is my job.

Why me

I’ve spent 50 years as a journalist, on local papers, Fleet Street and in national and international TV and radio newsrooms, and I’ve trained executives, politicians and celebrities in media and communication skills. Journalists look for the top line, the thing that makes a reader stop and pay attention, and that’s what I look for on your website. I also use AI extensively in my own business, so I know how these tools read a page and what they need to find on it.

Fees are fixed and agreed before any work starts, and any credit from The Website Read or Mould the Message is deducted from the fee for a rewrite.
