The Website Read

Are you an SME owner who feels your website isn’t doing all that it can to support your business? Then this could be for you – an editorial audit that will highlight where it’s missing the mark.

Many small businesses struggle to represent their product or services to current best advantage through their websites. The sites might have looked great and done the job when they were first built, but changes over time have left them out of date and out of kilter with today’s core business. They may still look OK, but the message isn’t quite right any more and nobody’s read anything on the site properly in years.

Fifty years of reading other people’s copy before it reached the public.

Communication is what I do for a living. I’ve spent 50 years as a journalist, first on local papers, then Fleet Street and national and international TV newsrooms as well as online and on radio. I’ve also spent around 30 years as a communication consultant and trainer. In all that time, one thing hasn’t changed despite the radical changes in media channels.

The key is still to pinpoint your authentic message and deliver it clearly by cutting out any irrelevant noise. That’s what I will bring to your website.

There’s a second reason to have an audit at this time. Your customers aren’t only finding you through Google these days. They’re asking an AI what you do, and the AI is reading your website to answer them.

If your site is vague about what you sell, who you sell it to and where you are, that answer will be vague too, or just plain wrong.

Most of the small business sites I look at are failing in the clarity stakes right now, and their owners have no idea what’s happening.

Four opportunities available this September only, closing on 30/9/2026. Your written report and recorded website walkthrough arrive within seven working days of payment.

What you get

  • A read of up to ten pages of your website expertly carried out by a real person – me
  • A written report, around five pages, in plain language
  • A recorded walkthrough of about ten minutes, so you hear the reasoning behind the report’s conclusions, not just the verdict
  • The three main things costing you enquiries – named and ranked
  • One round of questions by email, in the two weeks after your report arrives

The report covers what a stranger understands about your business within the first ten seconds of landing on your website, whether the copy sounds like a human being wrote it, how the site reads to search engines and AI, the errors and contradictions you may be blind to and the change I’d make first if the site were mine.

What it isn’t

This is an audit and nothing else. I don’t touch your website, I don’t make changes and I won’t be running technical performance tests or building you a keyword strategy. You’ll get a clear account of what’s not working for you and what I’d do about it. If you’d like me to make the changes for you, I’ll quote for that separately.

Who it’s for

Small business owners, sole traders and practitioners who have a website that’s a few years old and looking like it could be performing a lot better these days. You don’t need to be able to name what’s wrong with it. Working that out is my job.

The practical details

The fee is £147, paid in full when you book. Four slots are available until 30/9/2026 when the offer ends. Your report and walkthrough will arrive within seven working days of payment.
